About this deal

Nostalgia Central covers the period 1950 to 1999 and contains some words and references which reflect the attitudes of those times and which may be considered culturally sensitive, offensive or inappropriate today.

In the context, Hazard is ridiculing a native servant and the locals generally, allowing Philip to give the contrary point of view. Time has not diminished the artistry of all the actors and except for a few scenes where the quality is not perfect by today's standards, the overall quality of the production is top notch. The episode looks at the terrible conditions for German kids and defeated civilians, most unusual from a 1970 viewpoint. A lot of actors refused parts in A Family At War for that very reason, and some extras walked off the set rather than have the snip. We decided to get a box set, and discovered that by far the cheapest option was the Dutch edition of the whole thing.

The characters I cared a lot about in this series were Lesley Nunnerley as Margaret, formerly an Ashton, who gets married to Ian Thompson as John Porter. I also know there was a considerable amount of nit picking regarding accuracy of items on the set, for example packets in the kitchen, month of Frank Sinatra song played on the radio while the family waits for Churchill speeches, etc. If you're new to books, and want to learn more about where to start, check the sidebar or wiki tab on the menu!Coral Atkins, who played Sheila (terrified of her kids being evacuated in the series) was an unhappy evacuee herself in the war. It is the story of eight siblings, each of them in their own way "doing their bit" while remaining at the heart of the social life of the town.

The Ashton family struggles to deal with the harsh realities of the Second World War as their sons are sent away to fight. The USA has a different TV system to the UK so you need to check that DVDs are compatible before purchasing from the UK. That’s quite a responsibility because, as one of the directors said, “Two years is a hell of a long time to be wrong! Although sometimes working through such a marathon viewing task felt like a feat of endurance as much as a pleasure, on balance I think it was precisely because of the epic duration and stately pace of the series that I became so thoroughly enamoured with it.

According to one contemporaneous report, the programme’s ‘opening episode was seen in 6,850,000 homes, probably representing some 20 million viewers’, taking it ‘straight into the top ten with its first programme’, only just below the well-established Coronation Street in the ratings ( Sun, 28 April 1970). MusicMagpie were offering the Complete Series One for a couple of pounds, so I thought I'd take a chance. But the biggest cast member that got me excited about was Patrick Troughton as Harry Porter, John Porter’s dad. I was intrigued to find out what would happen to these two since their happy marriage was threatened by the declaration of war. This method of telling a story on location with a film unit shooting every day for twelve or more days is now the accepted pattern – it offers high quality pictures, flexibility and a wide-ranging style.

There were fifty major raids in the next three months, Between 20 and 22 December 1940, 365 died when there were direct hits on air raid shelters. According to one contemporaneous report, the programme’s ‘opening episode was seen in 6,850,000 homes, probably representing some 20 million viewers’, taking it ‘straight into the top ten with its first programme’, only just below the well-established Coronation Street in the ratings (Sun, 28 April 1970).As an observer, this seems strange over one hundred years later, but to those who had lived through the war years, it likely provided closure of sorts. All these events take place against the backdrop of the political conflict leading to the Second World War, which will have a major impact on their lives. Manchester’s Central station, long closed by the time the series was made, was brought to life again with set decoration, smoke and sound effects – but no trains. The memorable theme tune is from the end of the First Movement (Allegro) of Vaughan Williams's Sixth Symphony.
