About this deal

When Japan invades China, Ashley Anderson is sent away with his Uncle Sung to walk through the mighty Himalayas to Tibet and then to India from where they would sail to England to where his grandmother lives. However, far from being a threat, the yetis seem to know Ashley and start to worship him as their king.

For me, the greater part of writing is daydreaming, dreaming the dream of my story until it hatches out - the writing down of it I always find hard. He is just about to give up all hope, when he has a mysterious and terrifying encounter with a colony of yetis. His latest book is Boy Giant published by Harper Collins Children’s Books and Owl or Pussycat illustrated by Polly Dunbar and published by David Fickling Books. It was Benjamin Postlethwaite's job all his long life to make sure the light shone brightly high up in the lighthouse on Puffin Island. Thomas Peaceful is a young soldier looking back at his childhood from the battlefields of the First world War. Ashley escapes and makes his way back to Britain where there is a twist to the tale as he discovers why the yetis thought him a reincarnation of a divine spirit. Alfie and his fisherman father find a girl on an uninhabited island in the Scillies, lost and with no memory of who she is, or how she came to be there. His work will undoubtedly, like Peter Pan, stand the test of time, making him a truly worthy recipient of this award.

This small story throws light on the importance of empathy for others, and unbelievable animal instincts and brings home the importance of coexistence and caring for others. Full of vivid detail and engrossing atmosphere, leading to a dramatic and moving conclusion, Private Peaceful is both a compelling love story and a deep.Incredible emotions are evoked between them as they are each reliant on communication by gesture rather than spoken word. Ashley is seperated from Uncle Sung and finds himself living with gentle creatures, who revere him as a King ( or a God).

He has an unerring moral compass – his schoolteacher past has never quite left him – and books such as War Horse and The Butterfly Lion have a strong social concience and an honesty that makes them universal. Here the Chelsea Pensioner looks back on his life, football, playing football for Chelsea F C, his wartime experiences in the army and more football. The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Published by Viking Kestrel, /1987, 1st US, nl; aqua cloth boards, tan endpapers, in aqua jacket with Ashley in a mountain landscape; 8vo; 146 pp. What starts as a boy's introduction to the realities of war and loss in China becomes a reflective and wistful account of an arduous journey across the Himalayan mountains, the assimulation into and then loss of an intimate, unanticipated family, and the way this experience colours Ashley's perceptions of life in the unfamiliar civilisation of England. The rest of the story describes how Ashley is reunited with Uncle Sung and travels to England where he meets and, along with Uncle Sung, comes to live with his relatives and also succeeds in piecing together the reasons for his status among the Yetis. Michael Morpurgo was my favourite author as a kid and if I was 10 perhaps I would have rated this book a little higher. Set against the backdrop of war-torn Europe, I Believe in Unicorns explores the power of stories to transform lives.

I did enjoy the text once I got past chapter 4 as I found the first few chapters difficult to engage with. For me, the greater part of writing is daydreaming, dreaming the dream of my story until it hatches out – the writing down of it I always find hard.

Ashley is uncomfortable with his new status, particularly when he faces tests, as the Yetis expect him to have magical powers. He has won the Whitbread Award, the Smarties Award, the Circle of Gold Award, the Children's Book Award and has been short-listed for the Carnegie Medal four times. When their boat sinks, and Omar finds himself alone, with no hope of rescue, it seems as if his story has come to an end.
