About this deal

In large part, Midnights is a record of interiors, Swift letting us glimpse the chaos inside her head (“Anti-Hero”, wall-to-wall zingers) and the stillness of her relationship (“Sweet Nothing”, co-written by Alwyn under his William Bowery pseudonym). Few artists, if any, attract as much attention as Swift does for her promotion and sales strategy, thanks largely to her close relationship with her fans.

The sound is fully modern (synths you’d want to eat or sleep in, low end that sits comfortably on your chest), while the aesthetic (soft focus, wood panelling, tracklist on the cover) is decidedly mid-century, much like the Mad Men-inspired title of its brooding opener, “Lavender Haze”—a song about finding refuge in the glow of intimacy. Predictors have missed the mark several times recently, leaving industry experts and fans astonished. Midnights shouldn’t completely overshadow the exceptional work of other artists in contention for the Album of the Year Grammy. Talk your talk and go viral,” she sings, in reference to the maelstrom of outside interest in her six-year relationship with actor Joe Alwyn.

It’s also great for Swift, who’s earning more money from increased sales that will impact her performance on the Billboard charts and likely add up to one of the year’s best album debut weeks. Olivia Rodrigo's Guts, SZA's SOS, Foo Fighters' But Here We Are and numerous other outstanding releases are all in the running and likely nominees. So by offering four different versions of Midnights per format, Swift is at least quadrupling her revenue from some super fans, as well as their impact on the charts.

The 1989 album changed my life in countless ways, and it fills me with such excitement,” she wrote on social media at the time. Swift announced 1989 would be the next Taylor’s Version she would be dropping during the closing night of The Eras Tour in Los Angeles in August. It continues to sell and stream incredibly well, even after Swift dropped another full-length and scored multiple hits not featured on Midnights.

BTS and other K-pop megastars regularly rack up huge numbers by selling CDs and LPs with different colors and exclusive postcards and photos sold as collectible items, with the music as a secondary benefit. For over a decade, Taylor Swift has been offering fans a multitude of options when it comes to purchasing her albums across physical formats with exclusive editions available through a longstanding partnership with Target. Furthermore, Swift's most recent Album of the Year triumph was only back in 2021 for her alternative set Folklore. In today’s streaming-centric music industry, physical albums have become collectible tokens of fandom, and artists have been responding to growing demand.

Her latest album Midnights, released in late 2022, has been nothing short of a commercial and critical sensation. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA Enterprise and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply.
